196. Edward Henry Potthast, Cincinnati & New York, 1857-1927, Women and children on the beach, oil on mahogany panel, 8" x 10", signed. 75,000-125,000

Potthast was one of the most significant painters to come from Cincinnati in the 19th century, and is best known for his bright and care-free beach scenes of women and children playing in the surf. He studied in Cincinnati, Munich and Paris. He received many major awards from the National Adademy of Design, exhibited at the Paris Salon, and his works are included in several major museum collections.

Selden is considered one of the premier Cincinnati Impressionists. She was one of Frank Duveneck's favorite students, and she painted his portrait at his request shortly before he died. She also studied internationally, including with William Merritt Chase. A charter member of the Cincinnati Woman's Art Club.

121. China demitasse cup and saucer hand painted by Dixie Selden, Cincinnati, 1871-1936, pink dogwood blossoms with yellow centers and green leaves on brown stems. Bottom of saucer has dogwood blossom, full signature, and X.Y.Z. June 25 '91, all in gold. Sells with sterling demitasse spoon with leaf handle, blossom to bowl, and monogrammed XYZ. Excellent condition. 300-500.

Lindsay studied in Dusseldorf in the 1860s. He instructed students in his Cincinnati studio and was one of the founding members of the Cincinnati Art Club. He exhibited at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition, from 1870-83, Pogue's in 1875, and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1896.

125. Lewis Henry Meakin, Cincinnati, 1850-1917, Camden Sunset, oil on canvas, 21" x 30", signed. 3,000-5,000

Meakin was considered one of the best landscape painters of his time. He was a founder and president of the Society of Western Artists. He studied in Munich, and at the Art Academy of Cincinnati under Frank Duveneck and John Twachtman, and later was a teacher there for 40 years.

Born in Augusta, Kentucky, Stephen Alke studied in Cincinnati at the Art Academy with Frank Duveneck, L.H. Meakin, Vincent Nowottny and Henrietta Wilson. In addition to painting landscapes and portraits, Alke also worked as an illustrator and designed posters and art glass. He was married to artist Elizabeth Heil Alke.

123. Charles Alfred Meurer, Cincinnati, 1865-1955, Woman resting in hammock, oil on canvas, 18" x 24", estate stamp to back, unsigned, great frame. 2,000-3,000

Meurer at first specialized in still life painting, and is considered the last link to the heyday of the trompe l'oeil style. He later broadened his subject matter to landscapes. He was good friends with Frank Duveneck, and also studied under Thomas Noble and L.H. Meakin.

200. Bessie Hoover Wessel, Cincinnati, 1889-1973, Still life with flower and vases, oil on canvas, 18" x 16", signed Bessie Hoover on back, excellent color and execution. 2,000-3,000

Bessie Wessel studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati under L.H. Meakin, Herman Wessel, and Frank Duveneck. She married Herman Wessel in the home of Duveneck, and she and her husband became the leading authority on Duveneck's works after his death. She is best known for child portraits, colorful still life, and Indian portraits.

Born in Covington and apprenticed to church decorators, Duveneck studied at the Royal Academy of Munich in the 1870s, where he mastered his freely brushed realistic style. He was an instructor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, as well as chairman of the academy from 1905 until his death in 1919. He worked closely with several prominent Cincinnati painters.

208. John Hauser, Cincinnati, 1859-1918, Egloffstein castle with cows below, 1897, watercolor and gouache, 16.5" x 11", signed and dated. 1,500-2,000

Hauser is well known as a painter of Native Americans. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Munich Academy. In 1901, he was formally adopted into the Sioux tribe and given the name Straight White Shield.

209. Joseph Henry Sharp, Cincinnati, 1859-1953, Woman's face in profile, charcoal on paper, 19" x 15", signed. 500-1,000

A founding member of the Taos artist colony, Ohio born Joseph Sharp studied in Cincinnati and Europe. In 1900, the Smithsonian bought 11 of Sharp's Plains Indians portraits, and Theodore Roosevelt commissioned a studio to be built for Sharp.

Born in Germany, studied and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, also exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy. Member of the Cincinnati Art Club. Known for still life, portraits, etchings and murals.

129. Louis Charles Vogt, Cincinnati, 1864-1939, Merchant vessel, watercolor, 9.25" x 12.25", signed. 800-1,200

Vogt was a well-traveled and respected artist, and he had several exhibitions in the Midwest and New York. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and in New York.

Reggie Grooms started painting at an early age, and later studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Academie Julian in Paris. He was an instructor of landscape painting at the Art Academy, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, and a regular lecturer at the Cincinnati Art Club.
